D. The spine – it can get on their nerves
A child bends over. Happens everyday. An elegant image of a child
searching for treasure under a seat. Daily magic. The softness of
tone, the monochromatic image, reflects a sense of our own childhood,
images of our own photo albums. That might be me, or even my child.
A bent spine, now linked with a message about nerves. Now the formation
of a new understanding. Together with the phrase, there is a restoration
of the literal to a well-worn saying. And the message that is finding
its voice in parenting circles: “I too may seek a chiropractic
assessment for my child”. Listen – the spine can irritate
nerves if not working well. The bent spine – a powerful image
in chiropractic practice – is here most beautifully portrayed.
Artist’s note:
This is a gratuitous bent spine shot, a must in any collection of
chiropractic artwork. Having said that, this is the first ever collection
of chiropractic artwork, so what it comprises is up to me! The unique
character of this image is conveyed in the natural pose, the softness
of skin textures, and the subtlety of the spinous processes. I was
fortunate at that time – the mid-afternoon clouds diffused
the light, making the shadows softer, while there was enough light
to keep the shutter speed fast and retain a clear image. It is interesting
that only two of the nine images in The Paediatric Collection were
taken in the vertical or ‘portrait’ orientation. The
remainder were taken in the horizontal or ‘landscape’
orientation. I was inspired at an exhibition of …………
in Melbourne, whose work was almost entirely portrait, regardless
of whether the subject was Bondi Beach taken from the northern rise,
or a lifeguard about to enter the water. A landscape orienter from
way back, I wanted some portrait work also. I am very happy with
the results and impact of both this and the fallen child image.
