G. Chiropractic - a step in the right direction for your child
…all the piggies agree

This beautiful image elicits immediate joy. Alas, it may also be the least meaningful were it not for the attendant message. The feet - propped up and childlike, the seat base too long for short thighs, so he cannot dangle the piggies down. The worn timber bench – stories to tell, aching with age, contrasting the young limbs. The phrase - reminiscent of favoured nursery rhymes, and ticklish childhood games. And then the contrast again, you see. Feet carry the child forward, step by step, through life’s vicissitudes, and thus are robust and strong. And yet, feet are also delightfully soft, sensitive, playthings for parents and mischievious siblings. Many images and memories are evoked, and the clarity of the image, and intimacy of the subject, wrap those memories in humour and warmth. This image fuses a stronger spirit with a softer message.

Artist’s note:
Here the chiropractic paradigm is linked to general health by a blend of nursery rhyme, intimate subject and simple message. The key to the impact of this image is the unusual aspect – the toes and feet. In adults, these body parts are largely shunned, besmirched by age, infection and odour (yuck). In children, they are offered and shared, modalities of communication, tenderness and affection between parent and child. I have tried to underscore this age distinction by focussing on the toes, and with the softness of skin tones enhanced by print film (as opposed to digital photography), the image is appealing and comforting. The depth of field is short (meaning the feet are the only objects in focus) due to selective use of long focal distance (zooming in), and resultant narrow aperture. PC
