B. They’re very gentle – so are
we
The girl pauses while playing on her old bike. Her head is shaded
beneath a bonnet with flowers upon it. Here, everything is calm.
Her soft hands holding lightly. Her belly barely pressing on the
handlebars. Her dimpled elbow. Her profile, shaded and barely there,
still, conveying the gentleness of the age. The eyes, so often the
focus of another’s face, simply redundant in this posture.
We know enough. This gentle girl’s attitude carries the message
well. “Chiropractic is for me too.” Do not be afraid,
friend, for they will take care of you. Your children too. They
are very gentle. I am a child of the world. That’s how I know.
Artist’s note:
The difficulty here is obtaining a profile without exposing the
child’s entire face (as I sought anonymity). She was given
a hat, and with the chin-down pose we see only the tip of the nose
to the chin. This is a tiny portion of the head, when you consider
that eyes sit halfway down a child’s head. However, the most
distinctive profile lines run from the eyes to the chin, so extracting
a portion of this allows enough expression without obviating personal
disclosure. If you can, give the key subject a different tone (amount
of light). Usually, the subject will be the brightest part of the
image. Here, I made it the darkest, to maintain the anonymity. Of
course, this image was planned for those adults who had experienced
adjustments, and worried that similar forces may be ulitlised for
the paediatric patient. Clearly, the safety and comfort message
must come from the practicing chiropractor. However, this may get
the conversation started. Again, the environment (tree branch, kids’
chairs, shed) leaves the viewer in no doubt as to the redolent setting.
